Harmony Gold Mining’s hopes of winning control of rival Gold Fields appeared to gain a boost yesterday after the South African goldminer swung to a first-quarter operating profit.

 

BHP Billiton, the Anglo-Australian diversified miner, unveiled plans to spend nearly $1.5 billion (£821 million) to expand its iron ore and copper cathode operations in Chile and Australia.

 

Royal Dutch/Shell, the oil giant, has received the green light to build a terminal needed to develop a one trillion cubic feet natural gasfield off the west coast of Ireland.

 

Oil output by Yukos, the embattled Russian oil major, was flat or even slightly higher in October, according to Energy Ministry data, despite reports the firm could be forced to cut output by as much as 8 per cent.
