Yahoo: Shell Selects Trintech Technology to Enable Smart Card Acceptance at Petrol Stations in the UK and Ireland: “The Royal Dutch/Shell is a global group of energy and petrochemicals companies, operating in over 145 countries and employing more than 119,000 people.” (ShellNews.net)

DUBLIN, Ireland, Nov. 03, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Trintech Group Plc a leading provider of transaction reconciliation and payment infrastructure solutions, today announced that Shell has selected Trintech's PayWare SmartPIN software solution and Smart 5000 PIN Pads to enable smart card acceptance at all its company-owned petrol stations in the UK and Ireland.

The new PIN Pads will be installed throughout the Shell company petrol station network and will allow cardholders to perform more secure transactions by simply entering a four-digit number rather than relying on a signature.

"Shell plan to upgrade its company-owned sites by December 2004," said Ian Allison, Shell UK & Ireland, Payments Manager. "Shell chose the Smart 5000, with its hybrid card reader, as the best solution for new Chip and PIN enabled payment cards and legacy magnetic swipe cards. The customer simply inserts the card in the reader and when prompted confirms the amount and enters a PIN number", said Allison. "We needed a device that was easy to integrate, could meet the demands of very busy cashier points and that would not impact transaction times," he added.

Shell has led the deployment of Chip and PIN among the UK's oil companies. Shell was the first major UK oil company to achieve bank certification for its EMV system and is now the first to commence nationwide roll-out. The roll-out follows an extended pilot at high traffic sites in Northampton which was proved successful.

"Shell is a global leader in the petroleum industry and its decision to partner with Trintech is a solid endorsement of our Chip and PIN strategy," said Eamon Keating, General Manager of Trintech's Payment Division. "Trintech has focused on the petroleum sector as a key vertical for our range of indoor and outdoor pay-at-pump solutions. This contract represents a significant win for Trintech in this sector and validates our approach to focus on sectors with more complex integration and multiple application requirements."

About Smart 5000 PINPads

The Smart 5000 has a fast transaction speed, large display and powerful multi-application Linux-based architecture. The Linux operating system makes it unique on the high security PINpad marketplace and means that capabilities such as XML-generation, TCP-IP and USB are more easily supported than on proprietary software platforms. Trintech has adopted a standards-based approach to forecourt interfaces and has implemented an International Forecourt Standards Forum (IFSF) interface for point-of-sale integration. In the Shell UK EMV project Trintech has integrated with Fujitsu's existing forecourt POS system using its SmartPIN integration toolkit.

The PINpads installed in the Shell sites will be remotely managed by Trintech PayWare Estate Management System (EMS). This enterprise software system allows new security keys, parameters and software applications to be downloaded securely over a wide area network.
