Kota Kinabalu: Shell Malaysia and Sabah Shell Petroleum Company said the oil slick off Labuan was not caused by any leak in the pipelines of Sabah Shell Petroleum Company.

Nevertheless, Sabah Shell Petroleum Company is assisting Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd to contain and clean up the oil slick to ensure that the environmental impact on Labuan and other affected areas is minimised, Shell Malaysia said in a statement.

“This support will continue until clean-up operations are completed,” it said.

The clean-up operations on the west coast of Labuan entered the fourth day Thursday, with the affected area, near the Universiti Malaysia Sabah branch campus, showing a much-improved situation.

The operations are handled by Petronas Carigali and Sabah Shell and involve more than 100 personnel from both companies. A team from the Petroleum Industries Malaysia Mutual Aid Group (PIMMAG) is also helping out.

The source of the oil slick, measuring about 2km long and first detected at about 2.45pm on Monday, has yet to be identified.- Bernama
