A British man was among four people kidnapped from an offshore oil platform run by Royal Dutch Shell in Nigeria. One of the company’s main pipelines was also blown up in an apparent sabotage attack. The events cut oil production in the oil-rich West African country by 10 per cent.

The hostages also included an American, a Bulgarian and a Honduran, Major Said Hameed, a Nigerian military spokesman, said. “Efforts are being made to secure their release,” he added. Graeme Bannatyne, a British Embassy spokesman in Lagos, said he believed that one of the four was British.

Andy Corrigan, a Shell spokesman, said that gunmen in three boats captured the four workers from Shell’s EA oil platform off the Niger Delta. They work for two external firms subcontracted by Shell. Local communities have demanded a greater share of lucrative oil revenues and hostage-takings are common.
