  • Shell shareholders were hit in June with an £80 million tax bill that followed the biggest overhaul in the oil group’s 100- year history. Many faced large losses from capital gains tax after Shell Transport, which has its headquarters in London, said that it would merge with Royal Dutch Petroleum, its Netherlands-based partner.
  • In June BHP Billiton paid £3.8 billion for WMC Resources, the Australian miner that owns the massive Olympic Dam uranium deposit.
