ABC.net: Tainted fuel leaves PNG air passengers grounded: “Their major fuel supplier, Shell PNG, says the most recent shipment of fuel did not pass international aviation gas standards.” (ShellNews.net) 22 March 05

Thousands of passengers have been stranded in Papua New Guinea (PNG) with the national airline Air Niugini grounding all of its domestic and international flights because of a jet fuel shortage.

Their major fuel supplier, Shell PNG, says the most recent shipment of fuel did not pass international aviation gas standards.

Airline corporate affairs manager Eva Ani says using the fuel would have placed the safety of the plane and passengers at risk.

She says all of today's domestic and international flights have been cancelled until fuel is supplied to Air Niugini.

"The cancellation yesterday means no uplift of passengers," she said.

"No flights have operated so far, passengers have been affected very much so."

It is unclear how long the shortage will last.
