Sir - Shouldn't we backward Irish be grateful for the opportunistic exploitation of Shell and the likes of them? Shouldn't we welcome like the hospitable folks we are, with many a "Cead Mile Failte", same as we welcome any oul' soul from war-torn Africa. Sure what were these people thinking of by trying to obstruct the multi-million dollar construction that has the potential to refine natural gas for nearly a whole generation? So what if these folks foresee this thing blowing up in their faces, won't get a penny in return or even spoil their environment a bit. Shouldn't they be happy enough that they could help out another multinational in the name of progress and our hallowed economic growth? What's a few miserly Irish lives compared to losing €25,000 a day?

Actually, I think this whole enterprise is such a good idea that I would like to ask Shell to build another one of those refineries close to the residence of any High Court judge. I'm sure they'd love this. Petra Lawlor, Ballickmoyler, Carlow
