Nigerian Tribune: Shell donates 6 buses to host communities: Wednesday 19 October 2005

Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) has donated six 14-seater Toyota Hiace buses to its host communities in Rivers State to kick start their transport business.

The company also presented a cheque of N100,000 as a start-off grant to each of the benefiting communities to implement a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) it signed with its host communities in 2002.

The benefiting communities are Bighikiri Elem, Kalabari, Fouche, Ido Kiriyo-Ama, Orufingbe and Elem Kalabari, in Kalabari speaking area of the state.

The MOU, which SPDC signed with the host communities in 2002 on behalf of Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), ELF and AGIP partners, under the Cowthorn Integrated Gas project, was estimated to cost N52 million.

The MOU included a wide range of community developmental projects such as schools, health centres, small scale businesses and training programmes on skills acquisition.
