Jakarta Post (INDONESIA): Shell Launches Retail Gasoline Sales Ops: Wednesday November 16, 1:23 PM

JAKARTA (Dow Jones)--The Indonesian unit of Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSB.LN) has become the first foreign firm to launch retail gasoline sales operations in the country, the Jakarta Post reports.

Shell opened a retail outlet that sells unsubsidized high-octane gasoline on Oct. 30 in Karawaci, west of Jakarta, the report says, citing Shell Indonesia's external and corporate affairs head, Wally Saleh.

The report says that foreign oil firms entering the market must agree to open retail outlets outside Indonesia's main island of Java for official permission to start more lucrative subsidized gasoline sales.

Indonesia's government granted licenses in February 2004 to Shell and five other foreign firms to import and sell oil products in the country, ending the decades-long monopoly of state-owned oil and gas company Pertamina (PTM.YY).
