MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Gov. Jim Doyle on Monday subpoenaed executives from the nation's five largest oil companies to appear at a hearing and answer questions about soaring gasoline and natural gas prices after Hurricane Katrina.

The subpoenas were delivered to company officials in Wisconsin.

Doyle, a Democrat, estimated Wisconsin consumers overpaid by as much as $113 million in the three months after the hurricane, while oil companies reported record profits. Gas prices in Wisconsin and much of the rest of the country rose above $3 per gallon.

''What I see after Katrina is the oil industry got rich at historic levels and the rest of us paid the price,'' Doyle said.

Erin Roth, a spokesman for the American Petroleum Institute, which represents the five companies, said Doyle should wait for Congress and federal investigators to complete their own probes of the industry.

The companies subpoenaed were Chevron Corp., ExxonMobil Corp., ConocoPhillips Co., BP America Inc. and Shell Oil Co.
