SYDNEY (AFX) - Woodside Petroleum Ltd said it has appointed former Wesfarmers Ltd chief executive Michael Chaney as an independent, non-executive director, adding that Chaney is in line to become chairman.

Woodside, 34 pct owned by Royal Dutch Shell, said Chaney will become chairman following the retirement of current chairman Charles Goode in mid 2007.

Chaney is currently chairman of the National Australia Bank Ltd and Gresham Partners Holdings Ltd and president of the Business Council of Australia.

Next month he will become Chancellor of the University of Western Australia.

Chaney was a petroleum geologist on the North West Shelf gas venture in Western Australia, with Woodside-Burmah Oil NL, a forerunner of today's Woodside.

In 1983 Chaney joined Wesfarmers and was chief executive of the industrial, resources, retail and financial services conglomerate for 13 years from 1992 until his retirement in July 2005.

Chaney was also a director of BHP and subsequently BHP Billiton for 10 years until this month.
