MELBOURNE: Royal Dutch Shell Plc's Australian unit is boosting exploration as it seeks more large gas finds that may yield new liquefied natural gas projects, said chairman Tim Warren.

Shell teamed up with Chevron Corp in July to take up four exploration licence areas off the Western Australian coast and was bidding for more permits, Warren said yesterday.

Shell's Australian unit has a one-sixth stake in the Woodside Petroleum Ltd-operated North West Shelf LNG venture, which in July announced a A$2bil expansion. It also owns 25% of the Chevron-operated A$11bil Gorgon LNG venture, which aims to start production in 2010. – Bloomberg
