Royal Dutch/Shell is to advise Iraq's oil ministry on how it should rebuild the country's gas infrastructure.
The Anglo-Dutch oil group said it had been invited to provide technical assistance on the creation of a "gas masterplan", although this did not mean it was negotiating for access to any of Iraq's gas assets.
Shell has already bid for a research contract to help appraise two of Iraq's biggest oil fields, Kirkuk and Rumaila, in competition with international rivals BP, Eni and Repsol.
