Indoor Air Pollution (IAP), dubbed the 'Killer in the Kitchen' last year by the World Heath Organisation, is responsible for 1.6m deaths every year.
The killer fumes come from hundreds of millions of very poor households cooking indoors using traditional fossil fuels (and animal dung) on smoky stoves and open fires.
One of the Shell Foundation’s flagship investments is the $10m (£5.3m) Breathing Space programme that looks at 'market-based' mechanisms for extracting the smoke.
The pilot project in eight countries has so far cut the risk of indoor pollution for 200,000 households. The next stage, which the charity says is based on financially viable business models, is under way in India and Guatemala with a target market of 3m homes.
