NEW YORK - General Motors Corp. said Monday it will supply the state of New York with about a dozen fuel-cell-powered minivans and sport-utility vehicles.

Royal Dutch Petroleum Co.'s Shell Oil Co. will supply the hydrogen refueling capabilities.

An alternative to internal-combustion engines, fuel-cell vehicles emit only water vapor as a by-product of a chemical reaction.

During that reaction, electrons are stripped from hydrogen molecules, creating the electricity that propels the vehicle.
