NEW YORK -- General Motors Corp. (GM) and Royal Dutch Petroleum Co.'s (RD) Shell Oil Co. unveiled a New York-based fuel-cell initiative Monday.
In a press release Monday, the Detroit-based auto maker said it will supply the state of New York with about 40 fuel-cell-powered minivans and sport-utility vehicles, while Shell will supply the hydrogen refueling capabilities.
An alternative to internal-combustion engines, fuel-cell vehicles emit only water vapor as a by-product of a chemical reaction. During that reaction, electrons are stripped from hydrogen molecules, creating the electricity that propels the vehicle.
The companies are hosting a joint press conference in New York that began at 11 a.m. EST.
General Motors Corp. (GM) will supply about a dozen fuel-cell-powered minivans and sport-utility vehicles to the state of New York.
GM and Royal Dutch Petroleum Co./Shell Transport & Trading Co's (RD, SC) Shell Oil Co. will host a joint press conference on the fuel cell initiative in New York at 11 a.m. EST on Thursday.
